It is an excellent idea to shut down your waterfall in the winter. This will save the homeowner operating costs, prolong the life of the equipment, and prevent the ice dams from forming. If you have fish, they are going to need some source of oxygen in the water once the falls are down. By aerating, you are pumping oxygen into the water and it will help to maintain a hole in the ice.
