Should I feed fish something other than fish food in the fall?

Tuesday, February 5th, 2019

It is a good idea to feed fish less as the temperature outside drops. However, once the water temp is between 40 and 50 degrees F, you should change the type of food from the summer high-protein food to a wheat-germ based food that is high in carbs. fish need the protein in the summer to put on muscle, but now in the fall and into the winter their metabolism is slowing. If you want, your fish can have some Cheerios, oatmeal, brown rice, carrots, pumpkin, or frozen peas. Once the water temp is consistently 40 degrees or lower, stop feeding all together.

What else should I do to keep my fish from getting sick?

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

Q. What else should I do to keep my fish from getting sick? I already cleaned my pond. Do I need to do something else? A. If when you clean your pond, you are only using a net to clean debris in the water, you might wish to invest in a pond vacuum. The decomposing organic matter that accumulates on the bottom of your pond can be home to parasite fungus and bacteria. The vacuum will suck up the debris. Adding beneficial bacteria to your pond will help breakdown the muck and waste as well. Remember to reduce the number of water changes in your pond. If you must add water, make sure you condition the water. Fish need to maintain a slime coat. To maintain the slime coat and [Read More…]

Is it possible to overwinter tropical lilies? Pond Wiser 330-833-FROG

Tuesday, December 11th, 2018

Is it possible to overwinter tropical lilies? The short answer is yes. Our preference is to allow the tropical lily to go dormant for the winter. First thing, stop fertilizing them. Then remove the lily from the planting basket. Take out the tubers and rinse each one well with a strong stream of water. Trim off remnants of roots or stems. Store the tubers in a glass jar that is filled with damp, not wet, peat moss, sphagnum moss, or sand. Keep the container in a room that stays over 50 degrees. Check them once a month. If they are dried out, spritz them with water. Once water temps get above 60 degrees in the spring, they can be replanted into the basket with fresh soil.

For winter shutdown of my pond what else besides removing my pump and filter? Pond Wiser 330-833-FROG

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

To properly prepare for winter shutdown, you are going to want to purchase waders and aquatic gloves. If your pond is in an area where there are a lot of leaves, we recommend putting a net over your pond until the majority of leaves has fallen. Once the leaves are done, remove the net and store it to be reused the following season. Next, clean all the filters in the pond and remove. Trim back the aquatic plants and remove as much excess debris as possible. Install an aeration system and/or a deicer. If you don’t want to do it yourself, then you could always give us a call and we’d be happy to come out and do it for you!

Tips for shutting down your waterfall: Pond Wiser 330-833-FROG

Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

It is an excellent idea to shut down your waterfall in the winter. This will save the homeowner operating costs, prolong the life of the equipment, and prevent the ice dams from forming. If you have fish, they are going to need some source of oxygen in the water once the falls are down. By aerating, you are pumping oxygen into the water and it will help to maintain a hole in the ice. Instead of an aeration system, you can install a de-icer. Some homeowners do both. If the hole in the ice freezes over, you can pour a bucket of hot water on the ice or break it open. Just be careful not to pound too often or too hard on the ice as it could stress your [Read More…]

Someone told me my fish have swim bladder disease. What is it and what should I do? #Talktuesday Pond Wiser

pond fish

Someone told me my fish have swim bladder disease. What is it and what should I do? Many fish found in ornamental ponds have something called a swim bladder. This is a gas-filled sack and has two main purposes. 1) It helps fish control its buoyancy and remain at a particular depth in the water without having to actually swim. 2) The swim bladder keeps a fish in an upright position. If you notice your fish is unable to control its depth, starts swimming sideways, upside down, or its head or tail is down, it might have swim bladder disease. There are intestinal parasites that can cause swim bladder disease, but it mainly comes from your fish over eating, eating too quickly or gulping too much air during feeding time. [Read More…]

For the next few weeks, as the season is winding down, we will be having a #Tuesdaytalk Q: What causes brown water in my pond? A: Sometimes when the seasons change from summer to fall, pond owners experience brown water. Usually this is tea-colored water and is known as Debris Tea.
