It is a good idea to feed fish less as the temperature outside drops. However, once the water temp is between 40 and 50 degrees F, you should change the type of food from the summer high-protein food to a wheat-germ based food that is high in carbs. fish need the protein in the summer to put on muscle, but now in the fall and into the winter their metabolism is slowing. If you want, your fish can have some Cheerios, oatmeal, brown rice, carrots, pumpkin, or frozen peas. Once the water temp is consistently 40 degrees or lower, stop feeding all together.

If when you clean your pond, you are only using a net to clean debris in the water, you might wish to invest in a pond vacuum. The decomposing organic matter that accumulates on the bottom of your pond can be home to parasite fungus and bacteria. The vacuum will suck up the debris. Adding beneficial bacteria to your pond will help breakdown the muck and waste as well. Remember to reduce the number of water changes in your pond.
